What is Supervised Independent Living (SIL)?

Housing and Readiness Program for Young Adults in Care

An estimated 20 percent of young adults who are in care become homeless the moment they’re emancipated at the age of 18. Boys & Girls Haven’s SIL provides a safety net and strong emotional support system for young people who are transitioning out of foster care into self-sufficiency.

Girls and boys aged 18–21 years old are eligible.

Boys & Girls Haven offers one of the few fully SIL programs for boys and girls in the state of Kentucky. Our fully staffed dorm-style living provides young adults with the independence, accountability, and support needed to successfully transition from foster care to adulthood.

Requirements

A youth generally needs to be 18 or older for our Independent Living Program. However, a youth who is 17½ may be placed in Supervised Independent Living if an exception is approved by the DPP Director or designee. Kentucky’s regulation confirms this exception.

SIL is the more supported level. Under the FY27 contract, youth in SIL receive daily in-person contact. The regulation further describes SIL as having agency staff onsite and available 24/7, daily medication distribution when prescribed, daily face-to-face contact, and monitoring of curfew.

So a youth does not have to already demonstrate full independent-living ability to be considered for SIL. The purpose is to provide greater structure while the youth develops those skills.
