Independence Readiness?

The Boys & Girls Haven Independence Readiness Program is designed to propel a new generation of teens in foster care toward a successful transition to adulthood.

When young people “age out” of the foster care system, they gain the right to manage their own affairs, including where they will live and what they will do. In Kentucky, this happens at age 18. Legally considered adults, they may take charge of their own housing and daily-life decisions, both large and small. But will they be ready to make such decisions for themselves? Will they have the skills and basic information they need to live as independently as possible?

Independence Readiness is an innovative three-part program designed to assist youth in preparing for their future. Through a combination of life skills, mentoring, and career readiness training, Independence Readiness works to combat the high levels of joblessness, chronic homelessness, and incarceration found in youth exiting foster care.

Having experienced the foster system myself, I’m blessed to be able to give back to this population.

Our unique program blends the following elements to give Kentucky kids their very best chance

Mentoring

Access to one-on-one mentoring and group-style mentoring. We also provide case management to ensure match retention.

Life Skills

Life skills are the skills that allow people to handle everything from interactions with others to identifying and processing their emotions. Life skills such as networking, leading, innovating, time management, and adaptability are critical to success in one’s career and social life. We provide individualized personality and independent living assessments (Daniel Memorial, YouScience, Skills to Pay the Bills), intensive case management, weekly independent living and pro-social groups, and access to Equine Assisted Therapy.

Career Readiness

In addition to individualized career assessments and career coaching, our young people have direct access to a funnel of internship, apprenticeship, and permanent employment placements.

Partnership

Commit to potentially host a young person for shadowing, apprenticeship, internship, or job placement. To get started, e-mail IndependenceReadiness@boyshaven.org.
